Lungga (or Lunga) is situated at the mouth of the Lunga River on Guadalcanal and stands as one of the most historically significant locations in the Solomon Islands. The name is inextricably linked to Lunga Point and the landing of US Marines in August 1942, which marked the commencement of the Allied counter-offensive in the Pacific. The area surrounding Lungga hosted the original Henderson Field, becoming the epicenter of months of brutal combat. Today, Lungga functions as a suburban community of Honiara, encompassing the international airport and serving as a critical economic gateway for the nation. The region is characterized by industrial activity, warehouses, and residential developments that have risen over the former battlefield. The Lunga River itself is a vital water source and provides fertile riparian zones for agriculture. Despite modern urbanization, Lungga remains a place of remembrance, as the ground still bears the scars and artifacts of the massive military engagements of World War II.
