Tenaru is situated on the northern coast of Guadalcanal, approximately 15 kilometers east of the capital, Honiara. The site gained worldwide recognition during World War II due to the Battle of the Tenaru on August 21, 1942, which was one of the first major land engagements of the Guadalcanal campaign. Geographically, the area is defined by the Tenaru River, which flows into the Indispensable Strait here, providing fertile alluvial soils for agriculture. Today, Tenaru is home to significant educational institutions, such as St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School, one of the leading schools in the nation. The region also serves as a starting point for treks to the Tenaru Falls, located further inland and considered among the most impressive waterfalls in the Solomon Islands. Its proximity to the capital makes Tenaru an important residential and agricultural area, closely integrated into Guadalcanal's economic infrastructure.
