Zelenci Nature Reserve (Slovenia)

Weather…

The Zelenci Nature Reserve is located on the western edge of the village of Podkoren and is recognized as the source of the Sava Dolinka, one of the primary headwaters of the Sava River. The centerpiece of the reserve is a small, emerald-green lake fed by numerous underwater springs emerging through the chalky lakebed, which gives the water its animated hue. Maintaining a constant temperature of approximately 6 degrees Celsius, the lake remains ice-free even during the harshest winters. The surrounding Drni marshland provides a crucial habitat for a variety of rare flora and fauna, including carnivorous plants and protected amphibian species. Historically, the area gained international fame in the 19th century when the British naturalist Sir Humphry Davy described it as one of the most beautiful valleys in Europe. Since 1992, the 47-hectare area has been strictly protected as a nature reserve to preserve its delicate wetland ecosystem. A system of wooden boardwalks and an observation tower allows visitors to experience the landscape without disturbing the fragile peat soil. Zelenci also has spectacular views of the Julian Alps and the Vitranc mountain group.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The reserve is situated just a short distance from Kranjska Gora, easily accessible directly from the main road. A brief walk from the designated access point quickly leads into the heart of the wetland environment.
📅
Best season
The reserve remains captivating year-round, as the emerald-green lake famously does not freeze in winter. Visiting in early morning or late afternoon provides the most striking reflections on the clear water surface.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Specially constructed wooden boardwalks guide visitors safely across the delicate and spongy wetland terrain. The paths are entirely flat, making the brief route highly accessible for visitors of mostly all abilities.
🎒
What to bring
Standard comfortable footwear is perfectly sufficient for strolling along the well-maintained wooden paths. A camera with a polarizing filter can beautifully capture the intense color of the underwater springs.
🅿️
Parking
A small parking area is usually available adjacent to the highway, right near the main entrance trail. Finding space is generally easy, though peak tourist seasons may require a short wait for an open spot to appear.
⚠️
Safety
Visitors must strictly stay on the wooden boardwalks to avoid damaging the highly fragile marshland ecosystem. Proceeding carefully on the wooden surfaces is advised after rainfall, as they can become quite slippery.
⏱️
Time needed
Exploring the short trails and spending time enjoying the view from the observation tower usually takes under an hour. It is a brilliant, quick stop for nature photography on a broader tour of the mountainous region.
