Russian Chapel on the Vršič Pass (Slovenia)

Weather…

The Russian Chapel on the Vršič Pass is a poignant wooden memorial dedicated to the Russian prisoners of war who died during the construction of the mountain road in World War I. In 1916, a catastrophic avalanche struck the work camp, burying over 100 prisoners and several Austrian guards who were clearing snow from the strategic pass. In honor of their fallen comrades, the surviving Russian prisoners built this small Orthodox chapel during the same year. The structure is characterized by its traditional Russian architecture, featuring twin onion domes and intricate wood carvings made from local larch. Situated amidst the dense forests of the Julian Alps, the chapel stands as a silent witness to the hardships endured by POWs under Austro-Hungarian rule. Over time, it has transformed from a simple grave marker into a powerful symbol of international friendship and peace. Every year, a high-level memorial service is held at the site, drawing visitors and dignitaries to reflect on history. Despite the harsh high-altitude climate, the chapel has been meticulously preserved and remains one of the most visited historical sites in Triglav National Park.
