Arnoldstein is located in southern Carinthia, at the strategically vital junction between Central Europe and the Adriatic region. The market town's history was shaped for centuries by the Arnoldstein Benedictine Abbey, founded in 1106, whose ruins now serve as a cultural center and event venue. Another landmark is the Shot Tower (Schrotturm), a testament to the region's once-significant lead-processing industry. Its unique geographical feature is the 'Border Triangle' on Mount Ofen (Monte Forno), where the borders of Austria, Italy, and Slovenia meet. Economically, Arnoldstein has transitioned from a pure mining and smelting hub to a modern industrial site, with waste incineration and chemical plants playing key roles. For tourists, Arnoldstein has the gateway to the Gailtal valley and winter sports in the Dreiländereck ski area. The town's architecture displays an interesting mix of historical substance and functional industrial buildings, set against the dramatic mountain scenery of the Carnic Alps.
