At 1,611 meters, Vršič Pass is the highest road pass in Slovenia, connecting Kranjska Gora with the Trenta Valley. The road was built during World War I by Russian prisoners of war for military logistics. A small wooden Russian Chapel stands by the road as a memorial to those who died during its construction. The route is famous for its 50 numbered hairpin turns, half on the north side and half on the south. At the summit, hikers can find numerous trails leading to high-altitude peaks like Prisojnik, and see the famous Heathen Maiden rock formation naturally carved into the mountainside.
