Weather…

Velika Planina is an expansive karst plateau in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, home to one of Europe's oldest and best-preserved high-altitude herdsmen's settlements. Situated at an average elevation of 1,500 meters, the plateau is famous for its unique vernacular architecture, featuring low-slung huts covered with traditional spruce shingles that nearly reach the ground. During the summer grazing season, local herdsmen continue the centuries-old tradition of dairy farming and cheese production, most notably the distinctive Trnič cheese. The area is divided into several sections, including Mala Planina and Gojška Planina, all linked by a network of scenic hiking trails. Historically, the original settlement was almost entirely burned down during World War II but was meticulously rebuilt in the 1950s using traditional techniques to preserve the cultural identity of the region. The plateau is also geologically significant for its karst features, such as sinkholes and deep caves like Vetrnica. Today, Velika Planina serves as both a living museum of alpine pastoral culture and a premier destination for ecological mountain tourism.
