Gornji Grad Cathedral (Slovenia)

Weather…

Gornji Grad Cathedral, officially the Church of Saints Benedict, Fortunatus, and Catherine, is the largest church in Slovenia by total interior volume. Located in the Upper Savinja Valley, it occupies the site of a former Benedictine monastery founded in 1140. The current monumental Baroque structure was built between 1752 and 1761 under the direction of the Bishop of Ljubljana, Ernest Amadeus von Attems. The building's architecture is striking for its massive scale, measuring nearly 60 meters in length and featuring a dominant central dome. Its interior is home to several high-value artworks, including altar paintings by the renowned artist Kremser Schmidt. Historically, Gornji Grad served as the summer residence of the Bishops of Ljubljana, and the cathedral contains the burial stones of many of these prominent figures. Although now primarily functioning as a parish church, it retains its cathedral title due to its historical status and architectural grandeur.
