Slovenj Gradec is the economic and cultural hub of the Slovenian Carinthia region, located in the Mislinja Valley. First mentioned in 1067, it was granted town rights in 1267, making it one of the oldest urban settlements in the area. Historically, its growth was driven by mining and crafts, with Rotenturn Castle serving as its primary administrative seat. In 1860, the renowned composer Hugo Wolf was born here; his birthplace is now preserved as a museum. A notable modern achievement is the town's designation as a UN Peace Messenger City in 1989, recognizing its dedication to arts and intercultural dialogue. The medieval town center remains well-preserved, anchored by the 13th-century Church of St. Elizabeth, a significant example of local Gothic architecture.
