Ojstrica (Slovenia)

Weather…

Ojstrica is a majestic 2350-meter peak in the eastern part of the Kamnik, Savinja Alps in Slovenia. Its striking pyramidal shape dominates the skyline over the Logar Valley (Logarska dolina), making it one of the most photographed mountains in the region. The northern face of Ojstrica is a vertical limestone wall highly favored by alpine climbers, while the standard ascent approaches from the south via the Korošica alpine pasture. Geologically, the mountain is composed of massive Triassic limestone, creating a rugged, grey surface. The summit provides a magnificent panorama of the entire Kamnik, Savinja range, as well as the neighboring Peca mountain and the peaks of Carinthia. Ojstrica is considered a challenging destination requiring surefootedness and a head for heights, particularly near the summit. The surrounding area is inhabited by alpine wildlife and features hardy, specialized flora.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This striking pyramid-shaped peak is typically accessed from the surrounding alpine valleys. Hikers generally drive to the valley ends and follow steep trails upwards towards the mountain huts and the summit.
📅
Best season
Summer and very early autumn are generally the only recommended seasons for regular hikers. Snow typically persists on the steep north face and higher sections until late spring, making it hazardous outside this window.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is highly demanding, featuring steep ascents, rocky scree slopes, and exposed ridges. The final approaches to the 2,350-meter summit typically involve some scrambling and sections secured with steel cables.
🎒
What to bring
Serious alpine gear is usually mandatory, including sturdy mountain boots and weather-proof layers. A via ferrata kit and a helmet are highly recommended for the secured sections to protect against falls and loose rocks.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is generally available at the designated tourist spots in the valleys below. Since these areas are popular, spaces usually fill up quickly in peak summer, so early arrival is advisable.
⚠️
Safety
This is a challenging alpine environment where weather can deteriorate unexpectedly. Extreme caution is generally required on the steep sections, and those without high-altitude experience should typically consider hiring a guide.
⏱️
Time needed
Reaching the summit from the valley floors is generally a long, demanding full-day endeavor. Most hikers typically allocate eight to ten hours for the round trip to ensure they have enough time for rest and careful descents.
