Štanjel is one of the oldest and most remarkably preserved fortified settlements on the Karst Plateau in western Slovenia. Perched strategically on Gornja Branica hill, the site has been inhabited since the Iron Age, while its current form is defined by medieval fortifications and Baroque expansions. The town's dominant feature is Štanjel Castle, which was transformed into its present state in the 17th century by the Counts of Cobenzl. In the early 20th century, the renowned architect Max Fabiani significantly influenced the town’s modern layout and designed the Ferrari Garden. This garden is a masterpiece of landscape architecture, featuring an ingenious irrigation system designed to overcome the Karst region's natural water scarcity. The narrow stone streets, traditional Karst houses, and the iconic Church of St. Daniel create a unique historical atmosphere. Today, Štanjel serves as a major cultural center of the Karst region, celebrated for its harmonious blend of historical architecture and natural beauty.
