Rihemberk Castle (Slovenia)

Weather…

Rihemberk Castle, looming over the village of Branik, is one of the most magnificent and architecturally diverse fortresses in the Vipava Valley. Its history begins in the 13th century, founded by the Lords of Rihemberk to secure the vital passage between the Karst plateau and the Vipava Valley. Over the centuries, the castle grew from a simple defensive tower into a complex stronghold featuring Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. Its most striking feature is the central Romanesque tower, standing at 27 meters, which remains one of the tallest and most imposing medieval towers in Slovenia. In the 17th century, the Lanthieri family took ownership, transforming the fortress into a more comfortable residence and maintaining it for centuries. Tragically, the castle was severely damaged in 1944 when it was mined and set on fire during World War II, leaving it in ruins for decades. Extensive renovation efforts have since partially restored its former glory, allowing it to host cultural events and historical exhibitions. Beyond its history, Rihemberk is also recognized as an important sanctuary for rare bat species, which thrive within its ancient masonry and cool chambers.
