Pipistrel Aircraft

Pipistrel is a pioneering Slovenian aerospace company specializing in the design and manufacture of light aircraft. Founded in 1989 by Ivo Boscarol in Ajdovščina, located in the Vipava Valley of western Slovenia, the company has gained international acclaim for its innovations in electric flight. Pipistrel made history in 2020 when its Velis Electro became the first fully electric aircraft in the world to receive type certification from EASA. The company's diverse portfolio includes gliders, ultralights, and advanced vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) cargo drones. Over the years, Pipistrel has won multiple NASA challenges, most notably the Green Flight Challenge in 2011 for its energy-efficient designs. In 2022, the company was acquired by the American conglomerate Textron eAviation, although it continues to maintain its R&D and manufacturing base in Slovenia. Pipistrel remains a global leader in sustainable aviation and a key contributor to the regional high-tech economy.
