Štanjel Castle (Slovenia)

Weather…

Štanjel Castle is the centerpiece of one of the oldest and most easy on the eye settlements in the Slovenian Karst. The fortress was originally built in the Middle Ages to protect the settlement on Turn Hill and acquired its current castle-like appearance in the 16th and 17th centuries under the Cobenzl noble family. The complex impresses with its massive walls and the monumental entrance courtyard, considered one of the most beautiful in the Karst. Between the two World Wars, the famous architect Max Fabiani decisively shaped the appearance of Štanjel by renovating the castle and creating the adjacent Ferrari Garden, a masterpiece of landscape architecture. During World War II, the castle was severely damaged but has been gradually restored over recent decades. Today, it serves as a cultural center with a gallery for contemporary art, a museum about the Karst region, and an information center. The combination of medieval defensive structure, Baroque residential comfort, and Fabiani's visionary architecture makes the castle for cultural tourists.
