Sezana

Sezana is the principal town of the Slovenian Karst, located just a stone's throw from the Italian border and the Adriatic port of Trieste. It has evolved from a transit village into a thriving commercial and cultural hub while maintaining the rugged, stony character of the Karst plateau. The surrounding landscape is a mosaic of white limestone, iron-rich red soil (terra rossa), and vineyards that withstand the powerful Burja winds. One of the town's most prized attractions is the Sezana Botanical Garden, established in the late 19th century by the Scaramangà family. It features a striking collection of exotic plants and a historic glass pavilion that remains one of the finest in the region. Sezana is also a mandatory stop for wine enthusiasts, being home to the Vinakras winery, which specializes in the unique Teran wine, a robust, ruby-red vintage produced exclusively from the Refosco grapes grown in the Karst soil. Nearby lies the world-famous Lipica Stud Farm, the ancestral home of the Lipizzaner horse breed, offering equestrian shows and historical tours.
