Krn is a prominent 2244-meter peak in the Julian Alps, located in northwestern Slovenia. It dominates the upper Soča Valley and is easily recognizable by its steep, nearly vertical western face. Historically, the mountain gained notoriety as a site of fierce combat during the Battles of the Isonzo in World War I; remnants of fortifications, trenches, and caverns remain visible on its slopes today. Below the summit lies Lake Krn (Krnsko jezero), the largest alpine lake in Slovenia, situated in a glacial depression. The geology of Krn is defined by Triassic limestones, creating a rugged and captivating high-mountain landscape. For mountaineers, the summit provides one of the best views in Slovenia, stretching from the Mediterranean Sea across the Soča Valley to the central peaks of the Julian Alps. The area is part of the Triglav National Park and is a significant destination for history-oriented hikers.

Getting there
Start your hike near Drežnica village in the Soča Valley. The winding access roads are incredibly scenic but require careful, attentive driving.
Best season
Late spring to early autumn provides the most stable weather for this ascent. Summer has maximum daylight for this demanding alpine adventure.
Terrain & paths
Expect steep, rocky trails that demand significant physical stamina. Hikers frequently encounter historical remnants from World War I mountain battles.
What to bring
Sturdy mountain boots with solid ankle support are absolutely essential. Bring a reliable windbreaker, multiple layers, and ample drinking water.
Parking
Designated parking is available near the valley trailheads, but fills up extremely quickly. Arriving right at sunrise is highly recommended to secure a spot.
Safety
Thunderstorms pose a massive danger on exposed ridges during rapid weather shifts. Strictly stay on marked paths to avoid historical unexploded ordnance.
Time needed
This round-trip summit hike takes an entire, physically exhausting day. Fit walkers should plan for seven to nine hours of continuous challenging trekking.
