The Kolpa River serves as a natural border between Slovenia and Croatia and is widely regarded as one of Slovenia's cleanest and warmest rivers. Originating near the Croatian village of Razloge in Risnjak National Park, it flows for 292 kilometers, with 113 kilometers defining the international border. In summer, the Kolpa becomes a premier destination for swimming and recreation, as water temperatures in its lower reaches can climb to a remarkably warm 30 degrees Celsius. The valley is characterized by pristine nature, featuring dramatic limestone cliffs in the upper canyon and gentle alluvial plains downstream. Finding this exceptionally warm border river typically involves journeying through the serene rural landscapes of southeastern Slovenia. Numerous small villages positioned directly along the meandering banks offer easy, straightforward access to the peaceful water.
Best season
The high summer months of July and August represent the absolute best time for swimming and relaxed kayaking, as the water temperature becomes incredibly inviting. Late spring provides lush, spirited green shores but decidedly cooler swimming conditions.
Terrain & paths
The immediate surroundings comprise gently rolling green hills, lush riparian woods, and easily navigable riverbanks made of smooth pebbles or soft grass. The water flow is characteristically slow and calm throughout most of the lower winding sections.
What to bring
