Krško is a city located in southeastern Slovenia, spanning both banks of the Sava River in the historical region of Lower Carniola. The city gained international prominence in the 20th century as the site of Slovenia's only nuclear power plant, which began operations in 1981. Historically, Krško was first documented in 895 and long served as a crucial trading and artisan center on the border between Carniola and Styria. The old town features Krško Castle, perched on a hill overlooking the settlement, and the Valvasor Public Library, named after the polymath Johann Weichard von Valvasor, who spent his final years and died here in 1693. The surrounding region is also famous for viticulture, specifically the Cviček wine, a unique blend of red and white varieties. Today, Krško is a modern industrial hub with significant paper manufacturing and energy sectors.
