Kobarid Ossuary (Slovenia)

Weather…

The Kobarid Ossuary, perched on Gradič Hill, stands as a solemn memorial to the Italian soldiers who perished on the Isonzo Front during World War I. Officially inaugurated in 1938 by Benito Mussolini, the ossuary contains the remains of 7,014 Italian soldiers, of whom 2,748 remain unidentified. The monument's architectural design, created by Giovanni Greppi and sculptor Giannino Castiglioni, features three concentric octagonal circles that rise toward the summit of the hill. At the very top stands the 17th-century Church of Saint Anthony, which was incorporated into the modern memorial complex. The interior corridors are lined with marble plaques bearing the names of the fallen, creating an atmosphere of deep reverence and historical reflection. From its elevated position, the ossuary has expansive views of the Soča Valley and the surrounding peaks, which were the site of twelve major battles between 1915 and 1917. As a key site on the 'Walk of Peace', it serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of war and a symbol of international reconciliation.
