Haloze (Slovenia)

Weather…

Haloze is a hilly subregion in northeastern Slovenia, stretching approximately 31 kilometers along the border with Croatia. The region is internationally recognized for its viticulture, boasting a tradition of winemaking that spans over 2,000 years, originating in the Roman era. Its steep, sunny slopes composed of marl and sandstone provide well-suited conditions for grape varieties such as Šipon and Welschriesling. Geographically, Haloze is divided into the forested 'Great Haloze' to the west and the viticultural 'Small Haloze' to the east. The highest point in the region is Plešivec hill, reaching 594 meters above sea level. Beyond agriculture, the area is noted for its traditional architecture, including old wine cellars and thatched-roof farmhouses. The landscape is defined by deep valleys and narrow ridges, making Haloze one of Slovenia's most scenic yet economically challenging areas for large-scale farming. Nature reserves here protect rare dry orchid meadows, which host high levels of biodiversity.
