The Zlatoličje Hydroelectric Power Plant is the largest canal-type power plant in Slovenia and a key component of the energy infrastructure on the Drava River. It was constructed between 1964 and 1969 and was one of the most powerful power plants in the region at the time of its commissioning. The plant utilizes the drop of the Drava River through an artificial supply canal, enabling efficient electricity generation independent of the immediate riverbed. With an installed capacity of approximately 126 megawatts, Zlatoličje makes a significant contribution to the country's supply of renewable energy. What is this place?
The Zlatoličje hydroelectric plant is Slovenia's largest hydropower station, harnessing the Drava River's flow to generate renewable electricity for the region. It also regulates the river and provides flood protection.
Visiting
The plant is typically not open for public tours, but its exterior can be viewed from public roads and bridges. The turbine hall is off-limits for safety reasons.
Where to view it
The best public viewpoint is the road bridge just upstream of the dam, offering a clear view of the entire plant complex. The opposite bank of the Drava also provides an excellent photo opportunity.

The plant does not sell products directly. The surrounding region around Ptuj and Maribor is known for its excellent wine, pumpkin seed oil, and fresh apples, available at weekly markets.
