Šaľa, known in Hungarian as Vágsellye, is a major regional center in the Danubian Lowland of southern Slovakia. The town is strategically located on the banks of the Váh river and has long been a hub for trade and industry. Its modern identity is heavily shaped by the Duslo chemical plant, one of the region's largest employers. However, Šaľa's history extends much further back, highlighted by the discovery of a fossilized Neanderthal frontal bone, one of Central Europe's most significant paleontological finds. Cultural landmarks include a Renaissance manor house, which now houses part of the Slovak National Archives. The town also has a substantial Hungarian population, adding to its rich cultural fabric. Local cuisine blends Slovak and Hungarian influences. Šaľa is easily accessible by train and car from Bratislava and Nitra. The best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn, when the weather is handy for exploring the town and the surrounding flat landscape. The town is a fascinating example of how industrial development can coexist with deep historical heritage, offering visitors a unique glimpse into a less-touristed but significant Slovak region.
