Spišská Belá, picturesquely situated at the foothills of the Belianske Tatry (Belianske Tatras) in the Spiš region, is a pleasant small town with a rich history and a deep connection to nature. The city's identity was shaped over centuries by the Carpathian Germans (Spiš Saxons), which is reflected in the historical architecture surrounding the main square, dominated by the Roman Catholic Church of St. Anthony the Great. Spišská Belá gained worldwide fame as the hometown of the brilliant inventor and physicist Jozef Maximilián Petzval, whose birthplace today houses a fascinating museum of photography. Just outside the city gates lies the magnificent Strážky manor house (Strážky Castle), a Renaissance jewel surrounded by an English park, which today houses an extraordinary collection of paintings and attracts visitors from all over Slovakia.
