Podolínec, quietly situated in the valley of the Poprad River in northern Slovakia on the border of the Spiš and Zamagurie regions, is a welcoming historical town where time seems to have stood still. As one of the old royal towns, Podolínec preserves an almost intact medieval city wall with massive defensive towers enclosing its historical core. The heart of the city is formed by the historical main square, upon which stands the Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with its valuable frescoes. A dominant architectural element is also the massive Baroque Piarist monastery with the adjacent Church of St. Stanislaus, founded in the 17th century. Today, Podolínec is a quiet, undiscovered jewel that has visitors an authentic atmosphere away from large tourist crowds.
