Kežmarok Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

Kežmarok Castle, quite unusually situated directly on flat ground within the historical center of its namesake town, stands as the only fully preserved castle remaining in the scenically and culturally rich Spiš region. It was originally constructed in the middle of the 15th century, in 1463, primarily designed as a massively fortified military bulwark integrated into the town walls for local defense. Over the course of its long history, however, the castle underwent profound architectural transformations, particularly when it passed into the ownership of the powerful and influential Thököly family. This prominent noble dynasty completely transformed the austere medieval fortress into a comfortable, lavishly equipped Renaissance residence, complete with stylish arched corridors and richly decorated facades. A highly notable attraction within the castle complex is the beautifully adorned Baroque castle chapel, a true masterpiece of regional art. Furthermore, the castle is inextricably linked with the fascinating and tragic legend of Beata Łaska, who in the 16th century was imprisoned for years in one of the castle's grim towers by her own husband as punishment for her allegedly unauthorized excursion to the nearby High Tatras, an event widely celebrated as the first historically documented tourist trip to the mountain range. Today, the excellently restored building houses the comprehensive Kežmarok City Museum, which delights visitors with extensive historical collections featuring valuable antique weaponry, a fully preserved period pharmacy interior, and fascinating artifacts from local trade guilds.
