Humenné, picturesquely tucked away in the valley of the Laborec River and surrounded by the forested slopes of the Vihorlat Mountains, is a significant historical and industrial center in eastern Slovakia. The undisputed jewel of the city is the monumental 17th-century Renaissance palace of the Drugeth noble family, which today houses the renowned Vihorlat Museum and is surrounded by a magnificent park filled with centuries-old lime trees. Directly adjacent to the palace park is a characterful open-air museum that impressively documents the traditional wooden architecture of the Zemplín region and Carpathian Ruthenia. While Humenné was a stronghold of noble culture in the past, it developed into a major hub for the chemical industry in the 20th century, particularly in the production of synthetic fibers. Today, the city is a well-suited starting point for excursions into the Poloniny National Park.
