Stará Ľubovňa Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

Stará Ľubovňa Castle stands on a hill overlooking the Poprad River and has been a symbol of the Spiš region's strategic political importance for centuries. Built around 1280 as a border fortress to guard trade routes leading to Poland, its history is marked by the fact that from 1412 to 1772, it was pledged to the Polish Crown and served as the seat of Polish administrators. During the Swedish Deluge in the 17th century, the Polish coronation jewels were hidden here to protect them from invaders. The castle today combines Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural styles, having been extensively modernized following a major fire in 1553. Among its notable inhabitants was the famous adventurer and explorer Maurice Benyovszky, who was imprisoned here in the 18th century before his escape. At the foot of the castle hill lies an open-air museum (skansen) showcasing traditional folk architecture from the surrounding area.
