Orava Reservoir (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Orava Reservoir (Oravská priehrada) is the largest dam in Slovakia by surface area, located in the northernmost region of the country directly on the border with Poland. The construction of this gigantic hydraulic structure in the 1950s permanently altered the landscape and necessitated the flooding of several historic villages, including Slanica. Today, only a small hill of the former village protrudes from the water as Slanica Island (Slanický ostrov), preserving a Baroque church that now houses a fascinating art museum. The lake, located among the rolling hills of the Oravská Magura, is a popular destination for anglers, sailors, and beachgoers. In winter, the massive expanse of water often freezes over completely, providing a spectacular icy plain that is occasionally even used for winter sports.
