Orava Castle is regarded as one of the most impressive and best-preserved fortresses in Slovakia, perched on a 112-meter-high vertical limestone cliff overlooking the Orava River. The castle was established in the 13th century after the Mongol invasions to guard the northern border of the Hungarian Kingdom. Throughout the centuries, it was expanded by various noble families, most notably the Thurzó family, who transformed it into its current Renaissance form. The architectural layout consists of three main parts: the Upper, Middle, and Lower Castle, connected by steep stairs and tunnels. A massive fire in 1800 almost completely destroyed the structure, but it was subsequently restored by the Zichy family. Today, it houses the Orava Museum, one of the oldest museums in Slovakia, featuring extensive archaeological and natural history exhibits. The castle also gained international fame as the primary filming location for the 1922 silent horror film "Nosferatu." Its dramatic position and well-preserved interiors attract thousands of visitors annually.
