Lomnický štít

Reaching a spectacular height of 2634 meters, Lomnický štít is the second highest peak in Slovakia and arguably the most recognizable profile in the High Tatras, largely due to the remarkable infrastructure built upon its summit. The peak is uniquely accessible via a dramatic aerial tramway from Skalnaté pleso, a daring engineering marvel completed in 1940 that traverses a massive vertical drop without a single support pylon on its final steep span. Perched directly on the narrow summit ridge is the highest permanently inhabited building in Slovakia, functioning as a vital high-altitude meteorological station and, since 1962, a world-class astronomical observatory specifically dedicated to solar corona research.
