Domica Cave (Slovakia)

Weather…

Domica Cave (Jaskyňa Domica) is the largest and arguably most famous cave in the Slovak Karst National Park in southern Slovakia. Together with the neighboring Baradla Cave on the Hungarian side, it forms a massive, transboundary cave system that measures over 25 kilometers in total and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Discovered in 1926 by Ján Majko, Domica captivates visitors with its vast subterranean chambers, cascading flowstone pools, and impressive pagoda-like stalagmites. An absolutely unparalleled experience for visitors is the boat ride on the underground river Styx, which flows silently through corridors adorned with colorful dripstones. Furthermore, Domica is an important archaeological site: discoveries of stone tools, clay pottery, and bone remains prove that the cave was used as a sanctuary and cult site by the people of the Bükk culture over 5,000 years ago. The cave also provides a critical refuge for numerous rare bat species.
