Branč Castle (Slovakia)

Weather…

Branč Castle is prominently situated on a barren hill in the Myjava Uplands, providing a vast panoramic view of the borderlands between Moravia and Slovakia. It was established around 1241 after the Mongol invasion by Aba the Great to safeguard the western frontiers of the Kingdom of Hungary. The site spans nearly 7,500 square meters and is architecturally divided into a fortified outer ward and a central upper castle. A somber chapter in its history occurred during the 17th century when the fortress functioned as a prison for Protestant ministers who were held there under severe conditions. During the Turkish wars, it served as a vital refuge for the local population against Ottoman raids. In the early 18th century, the castle was intentionally rendered uninhabitable to prevent it from being used by insurgents, and it remains a striking ruin today, frequently hosting historical re-enactment festivals.
