Myjava, beautifully situated in the rolling hills of the Kopanice region in western Slovakia on the border with Moravia, is the historical center of the evangelical Slovak national movement. The city, which developed from scattered solitary farms ("kopanice"), played a key role in the Slovak Uprising of 1848/49; here, in the house of Mrs. Kolény, the first Slovak National Council was founded. This historical event is solemnly commemorated in the Museum of the Slovak National Councils (Múzeum Slovenských národných rád). Beyond its deep patriotic history, Myjava is known for its robust mechanical engineering industry and the preservation of unique folkloric traditions, notably its annual international folklore festival. The city is also the home of traditional plum brandy (Slivovica), which is considered the best in Slovakia.
