Skalica, charmingly situated in the extreme northwest of Slovakia on the border with the Czech Republic, is the historic capital of the Záhorie region. As a former free royal town, it conceals an architectural heritage of extraordinary wealth. Its most famous landmark is the Rotunda of St. George, a Romanesque building erected in the 11th century that received a dome in the 17th century. The city is world-renowned for the "Skalický trdelník," a sweet spit cake that was the first Slovak food product to receive the European seal for a protected geographical indication. In addition to this culinary specialty, Skalica is also famous for its excellent red wines, particularly the "Skalica Ruby" (Skalický rubín), which can be tasted in the city's historic wine cellars. Surrounded by vineyards and the Baťov Canal, Skalica today is an idyllic destination for history buffs, gourmets, and nature lovers.
