💡 Tips
- The town gets very crowded around September 15th for the national pilgrimage. Visit on a regular weekday to explore the Basilica in peace.
- As the Basilica is an active and important religious site, remember to dress modestly, keeping your shoulders and knees covered.
- The main train station is about a 20-minute walk from the Basilica; wear comfortable shoes or check the local bus schedule.
- The surrounding Záhorie region has very sandy soil; exploring the nearby pine forests almost feels like walking on a beach.
🍽 Food
Visit the small pastry shops (cukráreň) near the monastery square for authentic Slovak sweet cakes.
During festive days, look for stalls selling this traditional sweet, spit-roasted chimney cake from the nearby Skalica region.
Try the traditional Slovak cabbage soup in the local restaurants along the main road leading up to the Basilica.

You can find a wide variety of rosaries, candles, and icons in the dedicated shops right next to the Basilica.
Browse the small local grocery stores for regional specialties like local honey and homemade jams.

Šaštín-Stráže, tucked away in the tranquil lowlands of the Záhorie region with its vast pine forests in western Slovakia, is the spiritual center of the country. The city is world-renowned for the imposing National Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows (Bazilika Sedembolestnej Panny Márie), one of the most magnificent late Baroque structures in Central Europe. Housed here is the miraculous wooden Pieta, which attracts tens of thousands of pilgrims every year in September, including Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis in the past. Aside from its overwhelming religious significance, Šaštín-Stráže provides excellent opportunities for nature-based tourism and relaxing summer activities with the adjacent Gazárka recreation area, surrounded by sand dunes and lakes.
