💡 Tips
- Koindu is famous for its large international market drawing traders from Liberia and Guinea; Sundays are usually the busiest and most animated days.
- Because it is a border town, always carry your passport and yellow fever certificate, and expect multiple security checkpoints.
- The currency used in the market can be a mix of Leones, Liberian Dollars, and Guinean Francs; know the rough exchange rates to avoid confusion.
- The town is remote, and road conditions from Kenema can be extremely poor, especially in the rainy season; allow plenty of travel time.

Koindu is a border town in Kailahun District at the north-eastern tip of Sierra Leone, where the borders with Guinea and Liberia meet at a tri-point. The town lies in the Kissi heartland and has been an important cross-border marketplace since the late 19th century, with its weekly 'luma' attracting thousands of traders from all three countries. Goods on offer include palm oil, rice, cocoa, coffee, kola nuts, textiles, mobile phones, and jerry-can fuel. Koindu was one of the first flashpoints of the civil war: in March 1991, rebels of the Revolutionary United Front, backed by Liberian fighters, crossed into the country here and plunged the region into years of conflict. Today Koindu is once again an animated trading center with numerous money changers, small hotels, a Catholic mission, and market stalls that mirror a mosaic of West African diaspora cultures. The road to Kailahun and Pendembu was rebuilt after the war and is one of the district's main supply routes.
