Mont Buxton sits on the northern heights above Victoria and is named after the nineteenth-century British politician and abolitionist Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, who campaigned for the liberation of enslaved Africans. After 1835, many liberated Africans were settled in this district, which to this day gives Mont Buxton a particularly strong Afro-Creole identity. The curved and sometimes very steep streets lead through densely built residential zones of small single-family houses, often in traditional Creole style with timber verandas. At its center stands the Catholic church of Mont Buxton, which regularly holds Creole-language services accompanied by drum and accordion. The district also contains the National Sports Complex Indoor Hall as well as numerous small grocery shops and "takeaways" selling simple Creole lunches. Thanks to its elevation, Mont Buxton has magnificent views over the harbor and the surrounding green hills.
