Le Jardin du Roi (Seychelles)

Weather…

Le Jardin du Roi, established in 1776 on Mahé Island, is a historic botanical garden originally cultivated by French settlers to grow spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves, aiming to break the European monopoly on Asian spice trade. Spanning 8 hectares, the garden hosts over 500 plant species, including endemic palms and fruit trees. It was part of a larger plantation estate that included vanilla and coffee. After the spice industry declined in the 1800s, the garden became a research station for tropical agriculture. Restored in 1990, it now features a museum with antique spice mills and a rum distillery. The site also preserves an 18th-century aqueduct and waterwheel system, demonstrating early hydraulic engineering. The garden remains a key site for conservation of Creole flora and sustainable farming practices.
