Anse aux Pins lies on the southeastern coast of Mahé and is one of the longest-settled districts on the island: French colonists already established a plantation here in the eighteenth century because its long sandy bay offered safe ship anchorage. The name derives from the tall filao casuarinas (locally called "pins") that still line the shore. The district is home to the only nine-hole golf course in the Seychelles, the Reef Estate Golf Club, as well as a number of upmarket hotels. Anse aux Pins also hosts a traditional market hall where fresh fish and island vegetables are sold, and several Creole bistros serving classics such as daube de poisson. The village is well known for the Seychelles School of Hospitality, which trains the next generation of tourism professionals, and for St. Andrew's parish church, a massive late-nineteenth-century granite building.
