Zastava Industrial Park (Serbia)

Weather…

The Zastava Industrial Park in Kragujevac is the historical heart of the Serbian automotive industry and a symbol of the Balkans' industrial transformation. Founded in 1853 as a cannon foundry, the company evolved in the 20th century into Yugoslavia's largest vehicle manufacturer, producing legendary models like the "Yugo" and the "Fićo" under the Zastava brand. At its peak in the 1980s, the plant employed tens of thousands of workers and exported vehicles as far as the United States. Following economic hardships and the 1999 NATO bombings, the passenger car division was taken over by Fiat in 2008, resulting in the joint venture Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Serbia. Today, the site is a state-of-the-art production facility where, among others, the Fiat 500L was manufactured for the global market, and it is currently preparing for a transition to electric mobility. Besides the auto industry, the area also houses defense industry operations (Zastava Oružje), world-renowned for their firearms. Kragujevac is often called the "Serbian Detroit" due to this industrial concentration.
