Ćuprija, located in the heart of Serbia in the valley of the Velika Morava river, is a town with a deep and rich history dating back to Roman times. Once known as Horreum Margi, it was an important town and military fortress in the Roman Empire. Remnants of this era can still be found today, attesting to the site's strategic importance. However, the region's greatest cultural and historical attraction is the medieval Ravanica monastery, located just a few kilometres away. Founded in the 14th century by Prince Lazar, this monastery is a jewel of the Morava school of architecture and an important spiritual centre. The town itself is a bustling regional hub with a mix of modern and Yugoslav-era architecture. The town museum preserves the local heritage, from archaeological finds to ethnographic collections. Ćuprija is also known as the 'City of Athletics' and has modern sports facilities. The banks of the Velika Morava offer pleasant places for walks and relaxation. The local cuisine reflects the flavours of Central Serbia, with hearty dishes and grilled meats being specialities. Getting to Ćuprija is very easy thanks to its location on the main E75 motorway connecting Belgrade to Niš. The town also has a railway station on the same main line, making travel by train convenient. Belgrade and Niš airports are both accessible in about 1.5 to 2 hours by car. The best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn, when the weather is pleasant and the surrounding landscape is in its full glory. Ćuprija is a convenient stopover for travellers wishing to discover the historical treasures of Central Serbia.
