Bor Copper Mine (Serbia)

Weather…

The Bor Copper Mine in eastern Serbia is one of the largest and most historic mining operations in Europe. Commercial mining began in 1903 through the efforts of Serbian industrialist George Weifert and French investors, transforming the small town of Bor into a major industrial hub within a few decades. The ore deposits contain not only copper but also significant amounts of gold and silver, which are recovered as byproducts. For decades, the company RTB Bor (Rudarsko-topioničarski basen) was the backbone of the regional economy, though it struggled with outdated technology and environmental issues after the breakup of Yugoslavia. In 2018, the Chinese giant Zijin Mining acquired a majority stake in the company, investing heavily in new smelters and modern environmental technologies. The mine includes both open-pit and underground operations and possesses estimated reserves that allow for production for many decades to come. The city of Bor itself is geographically and culturally centered around mining, which is reflected in its architecture and monuments.
