Đerdap National Park (Iron Gates) lies in eastern Serbia along the Danube. It covers 64,000 hectares and is known for the spectacular Đerdap Gorge, one of the largest and deepest breakthrough gorges in Europe. The Danube flows through a narrow gorge between the Carpathians and the Balkan Mountains. The park hosts a rich flora with over 1,100 plant species, including many endemics. Historically significant is the Roman Trajan's Plaque and the remains of the Roman road Via Traiana. The area is also known for its birdlife, especially the lesser spotted eagle and the white-tailed eagle. Archaeological finds date back to the Paleolithic. The park provides hiking, boat tours, and visiting the Đerdap Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric plants in Europe.
