💡 Tips

  • Book your boat trip in advance, especially on summer weekends. Smaller boats can get closer to the caves and offer a more personal experience.
  • For the best high-up view of the gorges, hike to the viewpoints on the Ciucarul Mare plateau. The trail starts near the village of Dubova.
  • Ask your boat captain about the Tabula Traiana on the Serbian bank. It's only visible from the water and is an important Roman monument.
  • Some caves, like Ponicova and Veterani, can be visited by boat. However, access can depend on the water level, so check beforehand.

The Danube Gorges, known as Cazanele Dunării, mark the most spectacular part of the Iron Gates where the Danube cuts through the Carpathian Mountains. In this area, the riverbed narrows to as little as 150 meters, while the water depth reaches nearly 80 meters. Before the construction of the hydro-power dam, the turbulent waters and eddies looked like boiling pots, giving the area its name ('cazane' meaning cauldrons). The gorges are divided into Great Cauldrons (Cazanele Mari) and Small Cauldrons (Cazanele Mici), separated by the scenic Dubova Bay. The region's most famous attraction is the Rock Sculpture of Decebalus, the last king of Dacia. Standing at over 40 meters, it is Europe's tallest rock relief. Across the river on the Serbian side lies the Tabula Traiana, a Roman memorial plaque dating back nearly 2,000 years. Boat tours are essential for exploring the area, allowing visitors to enter the Ponicova Cave or visit the Veterani Grotto, which historically served as a military outpost. Hiking trails lead to the summits of Ciucaru Mare and Ciucaru Mic, offering panoramic views of the entire gorge system. The local cuisine is heavily influenced by the Danube, featuring traditional fish stews and grilled carp. The gorges are part of the Iron Gates Natural Park, home to rare plant species like the Banat tulip. Most visitors arrive via the scenic DN57 road from Orșova, enjoying the winding path along the riverbanks.
