The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin in Smederevo is a significant 15th-century religious structure and a prime example of the Morava architectural school. It was likely built around 1430 during the reign of Despot Đurađ Branković, at a time when Smederevo was the thriving capital of the Serbian Despotate. Located within the old town cemetery, the church features a traditional triconch floor plan and intricate decorative stonework characteristic of late medieval Serbian churches. Remarkably, the building survived the long period of Ottoman occupation, preserving many of its original medieval frescoes. These murals depict various biblical cycles and portraits of saints, showcasing high artistic quality and theological depth. Conservation efforts in the 20th century have helped stabilize the structure and protect the delicate paintings from environmental damage. Today, the church remains an active place of worship and a tranquil historical site that provides insights into the final era of independent medieval Serbia. It is officially protected as a Cultural Monument of Great Importance.
