Višegrad Hydroelectric Power Plant (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Višegrad hydroelectric power plant (HE Višegrad) is one of the most majestic and important energy technology facilities along the course of the Drina River in eastern Bosnia. Built towards the end of the 1980s, the project required the construction of a massive concrete dam almost 70 meters high, which transformed the wild river into a deep blue, tranquil reservoir that stretches for miles through the deep gorges. With its three high-performance turbines, the power plant is an indispensable component for the stability and capacity of the electricity grid in the Republika Srpska. In addition to its primary function of generating electricity, the dam also plays a crucial role in regulating the water level of the Drina, which is of enormous importance for flood protection downstream. The resulting Lake Višegrad now also gives excellent conditions for boat tours and fishing tourism.
