Bisesero Genocide Memorial (Rwanda)

Weather…

The Bisesero Memorial in the Western Province honors the brave resistance of the Tutsi in this region. Led by Aminadabu Birara, thousands of Tutsi organized themselves on the hills of Bisesero, using traditional weapons to fight off attackers for weeks. They became known as the 'Munyinya'. Despite their heroic struggle, they were eventually overwhelmed by the better-armed militia and soldiers, allegedly after the French military intervention (Opération Turquoise) denied them protection and disarmed them. More than 50,000 people were killed here. The memorial consists of three buildings that mimic the shape of the hills. It documents the story of the resistance and serves as a burial site for the victims. It stands as a symbol of courage and the desperate fight for survival.
