Lake Kivu, on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a place of exceptional natural beauty and tranquility. The lake's deep blue waters are framed by steep, terraced slopes where some of the world's best coffees are grown. Waterfront towns like Rubavu (Gisenyi), Karongi (Kibuye), and Rusizi each offer their own unique atmosphere, from lively beach promenades to peaceful retreats. Visitors can go kayaking on the lake, take boat trips to islands like Napoleon Island to see fruit bat colonies, or simply relax on the sandy beaches of Rubavu. The Congo Nile Trail, a famous hiking and cycling path, runs along the lakeshore, offering spectacular views and insights into local rural life. A unique feature of the lake is its wealth of dissolved methane in its depths, making it geologically unique. In the evenings, you can watch fishermen head out onto the lake in their traditional three-hulled boats (Isambaza) while singing. Accommodations along the lakeshore range from simple guesthouses to elegant boutique hotels with panoramic views. Coffee lovers should definitely take a tour of one of the plantations to witness the entire process from bean to cup. The lake is reachable from Kigali in about three to four hours. As the region has a tropical climate, Lake Kivu is a pleasant destination year-round, with the months of June to August being particularly sunny.
