Gisagara Peat Power Plant (Rwanda)

Weather…

The Hakan Peat Power plant in Gisagara is another, even larger, peat-fired power plant in Rwanda, building on the experience of Gishoma. With a capacity of 80 MW, it is one of the largest power plants in the country and a major step towards energy security. The plant, which connected to the grid in 2021, utilizes the abundant peat reserves in the Southern Province. It was developed as a public-private partnership and represents a significant foreign investment. Compared to Gishoma, this project has employed more advanced technologies to increase efficiency and mitigate environmental impact. Although peat combustion is controversial, the government argues that it is a necessary transitional solution to meet baseload power demand and drive industrialization. The plant has created hundreds of jobs and is expected to reduce electricity costs in the country.

📋 Practical info

🏭
What is this place?
This 80 MW thermal power plant uses locally sourced peat to generate electricity, significantly reducing Rwanda's reliance on energy imports. It plays a key role in the national grid by providing base-load power from a domestic fuel source.
🚪
Visiting
The power plant is a restricted industrial site; public access is not permitted for safety reasons. However, the facility's cooling towers and main building can be observed from the perimeter road outside.
👀
Where to view it
The best public viewpoint is from the road approaching the plant, where the entire facility and its smoke stacks are visible. The surrounding hills offer a distant but comprehensive view of the power generation infrastructure.
🧺
Local products
The primary output is electrical energy fed into the national grid, not sold directly to visitors. Travelers will not find tangible products here, but the plant symbolizes Rwanda's energy independence and use of peat resources.
📆
Active season
The plant operates year-round to provide stable electricity, but peat harvesting typically peaks in the dry season when bog conditions are more accessible. Maintenance shutdowns may occur periodically, usually planned during low-demand periods.
Nearby
Combine a visit with the nearby Gishoma Peat Power Plant to understand Rwanda's peat energy strategy. The area also includes the Nyabarongo River valley and agricultural landscapes typical of southern Rwanda.
