Gergeti Trinity Church (Georgia)

Weather…

Gergeti Trinity Church, situated at an altitude of 2,170 meters at the foot of Mount Kazbek, is one of the most photographed structures in Georgia. It was built in the 14th century and is the only cross-dome church in the Khevi region. Due to its isolated location in a barren high-mountain landscape, it served as a safe hiding place for precious relics and church treasures from other parts of the country during times of crisis, including the grapevines cross of Saint Nino. The complex consists of the main church, a separate bell tower, and a council chamber. During the Soviet era, worship was prohibited, and the building served as a museum, but since the revival of the Georgian Orthodox Church, it has been used actively again. The architecture is simple and robust to withstand the extreme weather conditions in the Caucasus, blending harmoniously into the monumental mountain backdrop.
